Where else in the world can you see giraffes against a city skyline, or watch elephants grazing with skyscrapers in the background? Welcome to Nairobi, where wild and urban collide in the most beautiful way.
Morning at the Giraffe Centre
My day started early at the Giraffe Centre, where I came face-to-face with Rothschild's giraffes, tall, elegant, and surprisingly gentle. As I fed one a pellet of food from my palm, its long, purple tongue wrapped around my fingers. I couldn't help but laugh. Behind it, just visible through the trees, was the Nairobi skyline. This was magic.
The Giraffe Centre isn't just a place to see these beautiful animals, it's a conservation success story. Once on the brink of extinction, Rothschild's giraffes are now thriving, thanks to the work being done here. It felt special to be part of that, even in a small way.
Baby Elephants at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
Next up was the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and I'll admit, I was not emotionally prepared for the cuteness. Baby elephants, some only a few months old, trotted out to meet us, their ears flapping, their trunks reaching out to explore. They were orphans, victims of poaching or conflict, but here they were safe, loved, and being prepared to return to the wild.
One baby in particular, little Lual, stole my heart. He stumbled over his own feet as he tried to keep up with the others, then looked up at me as if to say "Did you see that?" I left with tears in my eyes, but also with a huge amount of hope.
Nairobi National Park, Lions and Skyscrapers
In the afternoon, we headed to Nairobi National Park, the only national park in the world located within a city's limits. And there they were, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, even a lion, all with the Nairobi skyline right there behind them. It was surreal, beautiful, and uniquely Nairobi.
Evening at Bomas of Kenya
To end the day, we visited Bomas of Kenya, where we experienced traditional music, dance, and food from different Kenyan communities. The energy was infectious, the drums, the singing, the vibrant costumes. I found myself dancing along, surrounded by people who were happy to share their culture with us.
As I fell asleep that night, I thought about what an incredible day it had been, from giraffes to baby elephants to lions with skyscrapers in the background. Nairobi is a city of contrasts, but it's also a city that works, that thrives, that proves wild and urban can coexist.
