Kenya
Lake Nakuru is one of those places that gets under your skin fast. The alkaline water turns the shoreline shocking pink with flamingos. White and black rhinos roam the grasslands nearby. And from Baboon Cliff, the whole Rift Valley opens up below you. Two days here is not a long time, but it's enough to leave a mark.
We descend into the Rift Valley with stops at scenic viewpoints along the escarpment. Once inside Lake Nakuru National Park, yellow-barked acacias shade the path to the lake's edge. The afternoon is spent tracking rhinos through the sanctuary and watching the flamingos do their thing. We cap the day at Baboon Cliff with sweeping views of the lake far below.
After an early game drive through the park, we drive to the freshwater Lake Naivasha for a boat safari among hippos and fish eagles. We then disembark on Crescent Island for a walking safari, no fences, no vehicles, just you and the giraffes, zebras, and waterbucks around you. A quiet, genuinely magical way to end the trip before the drive back to Nairobi.
